Claire Monod Cassidy has a PhD in Human Biology and is a professional Licensed & Board-Certified Acupuncturist (retired)
Once a university professor in human biology, nutritional and medical anthropology, I eventually ‘dropped out’ to pursue research in acupuncture and comparative Medicine. True to the path of many anthropologists, once I wished to understand East Asian Medicine in depth, I went back to school— Chinese medical school—and became a professional acupuncture practitioner.
Now retired from clinical care, I am focusing on comparative medical research and writing. In my upcoming text—currently called Six Medicines, Six Gifts—I bring to life a system for productively comparing and using the wide variety of Medicines in the world. My dream is that ‘we’—the United States, for example—can move toward building a functional plural medical system. To do this, we will need to develop a strong drive, a major urge, to tackle the problems of the current dominant biomedical system, and to rebuild the face of American medical care as a more inclusive and less profit-based system.
In my writing I identify some universals and strategies that, were they widely recognized and applied, could support such a change.
